The Colosseum (actual name is the Flavian Amphitheater after the family Emperor Vespasian who initiated the construction process in 72 AD) is an enduring iconic symbol of Rome and ancient Rome’s engineering and architectural magnificence.   Built to accommodate up to 50,000 spectators on multiple levels, the Colosseum area held gladiatorial games, theatrical plays, beast hunts, mock sea battles, and public executions.

Although not much remains of this once formidable ancient Roman stadium, you can simply imagine the many dangerous chariot races that took place here (like in the movie Ben Hur) for the entertainment of tens of thousands of spectators.

Circus Maximus also has a magnificent backdrop of the ruins of once opulent villas of Palatine Hill.
