Having been converted into a church helped preserve this ancient monument from being stripped and quarried for building materials like other ancient monuments during the Medieval and Renaissance eras.

Known in Italian as “Bocca della Verita”, the Mouth of Truth is a marble mask against the wall inside the portico of Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Weighing a ton at 1,300 kg, historians are not quite certain of the original purpose of this marble disc that looks like a drain cover.

Legend has it, if you put your hand inside the open mouth of the disc and tell a lie, you lose your hand.  The Mouth of Truth was also featured in Vacanze Romane when Gregory Peck’s character pretends his hand was bit off by the mask when he told an untruth startling Audrey Hepburn in real life!

VIA MARGUTTA – Rome Shore Excursions from Civitavecchia – RomeCabs

Via Margutta, 51 was the famous address of Gregory Peck’s character in the famous movie. The address is real, and you can see it for yourself!  The large doors of the address lead to a courtyard that is often closed to the public, and in addition to a few artist studies, are apartment buildings stacked just like in the movie.

An oasis from the chaotic city life, Via Margutta is an exclusive, quiet and charming street flanked by old world buildings and lined with art galleries and boutiques.   Famous Italians like Federico Fellini (director of Vacanze Romane) lived on Via Margutta.

A few times a year Via Margutta becomes and open air art gallery where “100 Painters of Via Margutta” art festival takes place with thousands of works of art are exhibited by established and unknown artists.
